FAQ~ Frequently Asked Questions
What is human trafficking?
Human trafficking is the transportation and sale of humans. 1 million people are trafficked every year adding to the statistic of 27 million people enslaved today. 80% are women and children. Victims are deceived, abducted, or sold by their families, transported and sold into slavery. International Sanctuary works with girls rescued out of sexual slavery.
How are the girls rescued?
iSanctuary partners with a large international non-profit that conducts rescues throughout the world. The organization has legal and investigative teams that work to build the case. Once their evidence is gathered, the information is brought to the local authorities. Often times a sex party is arranged at a hotel where many girls are requested. Along with the countries police force, a raid is set up to rescue the girls out. Due to corruption within the local police departments, rescues are not always successful.
What happens to the girls once they are rescued?
Upon rescue, the girls are placed in a thirty day government facility until their ages can be verified. During this time, the girls are vulnerable to become victims of corruption. Doctors are often paid off to lie and prove the girls are of age. Once it is verified that the girls are minors they are placed in aftercare homes. The home acts as a place of safety while they are under the protection of the Child Welfare Committee. During this period, which may range from months to years, depending on the age they are at rescue, iSanctuary works to provide stability and consistency through offering skills training, education, counseling, and livelihood opportunities.
Why don’t you just buy the girls out of prostitution?
International Sanctuary does not advocate the purchase of girls for their freedom. In doing so, you are adding to the supply and demand. By legally removing them, though it is a length process, the pimps can be brought to justice.
How old are the girls?
The girls International Sanctuary works with are 13 to 18 years old, though at the time of trafficking and sale they may have been much younger. Each situation varies based on how long they were enslaved. Girls that are trafficked have been known to be as young as age 5.
What happens to the girls once they get to the US?
The girls are never brought to the United States. They remain in the country where they were rescued. They continue to live in an aftercare home during the course of their legal trial. If the family is proven to be innocent in the transaction of the sale, then the girl will eventually be returned to her home.
How much is returned to the girls from the sale of products?
The girls are paid 100% above fair trade wage. The additional funds provide counseling, scholarships, education, and training for the girls. Funds are available to supply the aftercare homes with needed materials as well. Each girl has a bank account where their earnings are deposited and saved for their future.
What happens to the girls once they turn 18?
Though the aftercare homes are intended for minors, the girls are not kicked out once they turn 18. Upon turning of age, the homes encourage them to move to transitional facilities where they can gain more independence and eventually be on their own.
Why India?
India has over 10,000 women enslaved in prostitution. 70% of India’s population lives in poverty. Why not India?
Why aren’t you helping girls in the US?
International Sanctuary is a member of the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force Coalition. Human trafficking even takes place in the US. In the future we hope to work with survivors here in the states.
How can I help? Get Involved:
Become an advocate for survivors of human trafficking. There are a variety of ways you can get involved. We are currently looking for individuals that are interested using their skills on behalf of the cause. We are in need of professionals in various areas: accounting, import/export, design, retailers, international business, as well as people that are willing to host awareness events and home parties. We can always use additional hands and help. Meetings will be held in Orange County, Santa Cruz, and Kansas City in January to discuss the future of International Sanctuary. Check the events schedules for dates and times.
