Tattoo artists will soon be joining the ranks in the fight against human trafficking. At the urge of Change.org members, the National Tattoo Association has invited the Polaris Project, an anti-trafficking organization, to provide human-trafficking training at their next conference. Often times, victims who are trafficked are branded by being forced by their pimps to get a tattoo with their nickname. In doing so, the pimps increase their power over the trafficked victim and increases the victim’s feeling of helplessness. These branding tattoos are also a constant reminder of the abuse and trauma for survivors of human trafficking because the tattoos never fade. By training tattoo artists on human trafficking, they will be able to be on the frontline preventing pimps from branding their victims and reporting suspected cases to the police.
