In April, The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suits in Hawaii and Washington against Global Horizons Inc., which is a Beverly Hills, CA based farm labor contractor, and eight farms. Global Horizons is contended to have “engaged in a pattern or practice of national origin and race discrimination, harassment and retaliation” due to their trafficking of more than 200 Thai men to farms. The selected Thai men were promised working conditions that were in compliance with U.S. law in exchange for high recruiting fees, but the reality of these men was daily harassment, intimidation, and threats of “deportation, arrest, suspension, or physical violence.” The EEOC is seeking back pay, compensatory and punitive damages on behalf of the trafficked workers, and an injunctive relief to prevent further abuses at the companies and farms.
